Your Questions About Mount Lcd Tv Drywall

Mounting a 42″ LCD TV over fireplace into drywall?

I am trying to mount my 42″ LCD TV over my fireplace – problem is I don’t think there are studs behind the fireplace, just drywall. Previous experience hanging pictures, etc I found metal studs, thats it. Question is, if I use four 50lb drywall anchors, has anyone had experience with these working in place of a stud anchor…or any other ideas?

Brian answers:

Well i would advise you not to use any drywall anchor to mount a tv.. If you do not want to cut the sheetrock and block out or add studs to mount your tv i would it out with a 2×4 going across 2 studs on the ouside of the sheetrock and then sheetrock over the fur out. Remember cutting a hole in a wall and adding blocking will be hid by the tv once its mounted

Ken asks…

What do you do when installing a 60in LCD tv wires behind the drywall.?

I have the TV mounted however when trying to fish the wire through the hole it will not go all the way down to the outlet panel I cut for it. It feels like something is stuck but there is a lot of pink installation. What do I do?

Brian answers:

If the wall is insulated, it’s an exterior wall. Chances are you ran into a “fire stop” which is a board placed horizontally between the studs to slow down the spread of a fire. You will have to drill through it or go around it.

How to mount a flatscreen TV without a stud???

I have recently moved into an apartment where I need to mount my 32″ flatscreen LCD TV. The only possible place for this with the layout is above the fireplace. Problem is… there are no studs above the fireplace (i’ve checked). It’s just drywall.

What solutions are there? I’ve come across someone telling me to install a board behind it and distribute weight with more screws and to mount it on that. Is that a good idea or is there a better (safer) solution????

Also, before someone tells me not to put it above the fireplace- i wont be using it much and the tempature doesn’t get too high.

The TV weighs 30 pounds, the mount is about 10.
I’m pretty sure there are NO studs. I used two stud finders- i’ve run across this problem online with many people in apts and fireplaces.

Brian answers:

Well we know Jeepiegu can’t read, if she could, she would know that you used two different stud detecters and both tells you there are no studs. Well,,no studs. That COULD mean that the chimney wall is against the drywall (gyprock) on the inside. Now, this gyprock is more than likely ,what they call firechek and it is 16mm thick…. OK,thats settled.. Now, if you were to drill a small hole thru the gyprock with a normal steel bit and if it stops after about 1/2″ it more than likely is trying to drill thru brick,, hence chimney, if this is the case you can drill bigger holes to suit nylon anchors or dynabolts with a screw -in hook and you can more than hang you tv safely. If not ,,like if the dill goes into nothing then what you do is go to you local home improvement center and purchase some nylon or metal screw in anchors, screw hooks or catches to suit tv screen into these anchors, Then ,,,before hanging tv put screen against wall and mark the under side of the screen on the wall and install anarrow shelf ,using the same method of anchors, but attach 3 angle brackets to the anchors with screws and fit your shelf to the brackets, this will help to take the weight of the screen,,, dont forget to mention the weight of the screen as the hooks!! Have different supporting weights, ask for hooks to support 30lbs, that way if you have two 30lb hooks supporting it they spread the weight ratio. Plus the shelf ,,man you got it made… Hang on… You said the mount weighs 10lbs. Woooo. This needs a beer!!! Does the mount hold it out from the wall??? Or.. Is to hold it against the wall?? If it is on wall your ok.. If its out you might have to rethink the shelf width or do away with the mount.. That might take several beers but with my gobledigob advice you will work something out, I know you can do it….

Mary asks…

Can my LCD screen be safely monted?

I want to mount a 55″ LCD screen on my wall using a full mountion mount system. (Pulls out from the wall approximately 18″ and allows tilt/swivel, turn, etc…)

My screen weighs approx. 80lb with the mount weighing approx. 25lb. I have 22″ studs. Full motion systems are usually set up for 16″ studs which means I can only use one stud as my primary means of holding everything up. If I use 4-8 additional heavy duty drywall anchors onto interior drywall, will my TV be safely mounted?

Brian answers:

Like Dave said, just follow the instructions precisely, and make sure your anchor bolts are rated for the 105 pounds total weight — more would be better!
